Anticolonial Explorations of Astrology & Gender
"What's Your Sign?": An Anticolonial Exploration of the Connections between Astrology and Gender
CLASS DESCRIPTION
Astrology has been a vehicle for connection that transcends geography and generations. This divinatory tool has undergone centuries of appropriations. Inclusive of but not limited to delegitimization from institutions that disregard its application on bases that can only be reduced to the same misogyny that implies a separation of rational thought from intuitive actions.
Join Amaryllis Ara for a lecture exploring astrology and somatic based learning with the intention of mapping how astrology came to be understood through a cisheteropatriarchal lens, how historically marginalised people have utilised this tool, and how this tool has been appropriated in the west. This session will offer opportunities for relation and discussion through the lenses of astrology, mythopoeticism, and queer theory; enabling participants to utilise astrology to make meaning in their own contexts while paying respect to the origins of the craft.
ABOUT OUR LECTURER
Amaryllis Ara (ze/zir/they/them) is a multimodal artist, researcher and facilitator from Yamaye/Jamaica. Ze is fond of rabbits, forests and being near the sea. Through an experimental practice, they acknowledge the queer body as a site of self and collective liberation. Decoloniality is at the root of zir concerns. Identifying recollection as a process of reclamation, Amaryllis pulls from foundations in visual storytelling, media production, somatic modalities, and critical theories of power, gender and queerness. They archive black queer perspectives through qualitative, arts-based methods fueled by memory and curiosity. Ara’s work is a union of research, critical fabulation, and emotional alchemy. Amaryllis is a certified meditation practitioner with 8 years of experience learning and practicing astrology. Spirit is in everything they do. They challenge the oppressor within by learning more about zir own histories; unpacking the ways that we have been taught to learn, heal, play and be in relation. By applying the things learned from their lineages, this practice is the bridge where timelines come to merge.
